Pressure turbine sensors

Pressure turbine sensors, including dynamic pressure transducers and flow sensors, are critical for monitoring performance, combustion stability, and safety in gas and wind turbines. They measure high-frequency pressure oscillations (up to), fuel/hydraulic pressure, and wind loading. These sensors enable optimal fuel-air mixing, prevent compressor surge, and manage blade pitch to ensure maximum efficiency and structural integrity.

Key Applications and Functions

  • Wind Turbines: Pressure sensors monitor wind speed and pressure on blades to adjust pitch, while, in hydraulic systems, they manage yaw brakes and maintain pressure in accumulators to prevent damage from excessive wind speeds.
  • Flow Monitoring: High-pressure turbine flow sensors are used in industrial applications to measure the volumetric flow of fuel, hydraulic oil, or other liquids in pressurized pipes, providing accurate, pulse-signal outputs.
  • Gas Turbines (Combustion/Industrial): Dynamic pressure sensors, often piezoelectric (e.g., UHT-12), are used to detect combustion instability, compressor surge, or stall, allowing for precise control and lower emissions. They monitor high-temperature environments (up to) for jet pipe resonance or, specifically, in power generation turbines.

Key Sensor Technologies

  • Piezoelectric Pressure Transducers: Used for high-temperature and dynamic (fast-changing) measurements in gas turbines.
  • Stainless Steel Flow Sensors: Used for liquid flow measurement in hydraulic and fuel systems, capable of handling high pressures.
  • Pressure Transmitters/Switches: Used for monitoring constant or changing hydraulic pressure in braking systems.

Common Features

  • High Temperature Tolerance: Sensors for gas turbines must operate continuously at extreme temperatures (e.g., ).
  • Signal Output: Often provide 4-20 mA or pulse outputs for integration with PLCs and control systems.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Crucial for sensors exposed to hydraulic fluids.
  • Key manufacturers in this space include Meggitt Sensing SystemsGems SensorsDruck (Baker Hughes), Bentley Nevada,  and WIKA
